Mrs. Mary Ruth McGhee-Smith

October 28, 1959 ~ March 10, 2022 (age 62)

With profound sadness, C.J. Edwards Funeral Home announce the passing of Mary R. Smith of Fort Valley, Ga.  Funeral services for Mrs. Mary R. Smith will be held on Friday, March 18, 2022 at 1:00 PM in the C.J. Edwards Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Willowlake Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Mary Ruth McGhee Smith, affectionately known as “Malruth” was born October 28, 1959 in Richmond County, Georgia to the late Freddie McGhee, Sr. and the late Ruby Lee Marshall McGhee.

Mary Ruth attended the public schools in Peach County and graduated from Peach County High School as an honor graduate in 1978.  She was also a Peach County Trojan Flag Girl.

At an early age, she accepted Christ and joined the Shiloh Baptist Church in Fort Valley, GA.  She was known as a walking Bible and could quote it from Genesis to Revelations.

She was one of most special mothers a person would ever want to meet.  Her children meant the world to her and she talked about them all of the time. She was known as being “outspoken” because she didn’t bite her tongue; she spoke whatever was on her mind. She said what she meant and meant what she said.

She had a special infinity for reading, writing, singing, and dancing.  She loved all types of music, but two of her all-time favorites were Lee Williams and Debra Snipes.  When you visited her home, you could hear her music playing once you pulled up in her driveway.

Mary was very clean, neat, and loved to get dressed up. She would take t-shirts, match her clothes, and make scarfs to tie on other’s heads.  She could tie a scarf unlike anybody else. She also like jewelry and knew her way around a kitchen.  Nobody could make dressing the way that she did.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Freddie McGhee, Sr. and Ruby Lee Marshall McGhee, three brothers, Willie Frank McGhee, Curtis McGhee, Freddie McGhee, Jr., and a sister, Julia Mae Jackson.

She leaves to cherish her legacy; a devoted husband, Richard Smith, Jr., Warner Robins, GA; two very special and devoted sons,  Picassio (Shaquita) McGhee, and Jarmell (Latoya) McGhee, all of Warner Robins, GA; three sisters, a devoted sister, Delores Cohen, Warner Robins, GA, Evangelist Linda (Kenny) Barnes, Fort Valley, GA; a devoted sister, Teresa (Carlton) Shine, Warner Robins, GA; three brothers, Bobby McGhee, Sr., Macon, GA, Kenneth McGhee, Jacksonville, FL, and Lee Williams, Roberta, GA; two aunts, Lillie Snead, Fort Valley, GA and Betty Jean (Will) Leary, Fort Valley, Georgia; a devoted cousin, Betty Bender, Fort Valley, GA; three God sisters, a devoted God sister, Shirley (James) Wright-Howard, Warner Robins, GA; Barbara (Ricky) Smith, Byron, GA, and Elaine Lewis, Fort Valley, GA;, a brother-in-law, Manoleto Smith; a sister-in-law, Jessica (Erika) Smith, North Carolina, extended family; The Lewis Family, Powersville, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many sorrowing friends.
